What is Overtime Work?
Turkish: Fazla Çalışma
Overtime work refers to the time employees work beyond the normal working hours set by law. Under Turkish Labor Law, working time exceeding 45 hours per week is considered overtime, and employers are obliged to pay employees extra for these hours. Overtime pay is calculated as at least 50% more than the normal hourly wage.
The basic rules of overtime are:
- Employees cannot be made to work overtime without their written consent.
- A maximum of 270 hours of overtime can be worked in a year.
- Instead of overtime pay, an employee can request time off in lieu.
- Under certain conditions, such as health reasons, night work and special circumstances, overtime may be restricted or prohibited.
Employers should manage overtime hours carefully to protect employee health and work efficiency, and should respect employee rights within the legal framework.
